Origin, history

This training type is derived from Trataka meditation of Kundalini tradition of Yoga. According to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, “Trataka eradicates all eye diseases, fatigue, and sloth, and closes the doorway creating these problems”. Thus it is claimed to help with eye problems, to purify and to enhance the third eye chakra and to generate strong psychic abilities.
In Jewish mysticism (like Kabbalah) there is a very similar meditation, in which a practitioner gazes upon Hebrew letters.

Setting the training

  1. Download this pattern if you don't have it yet.
  2. Choose this pattern in Training tab or Control tab just before you are about to eat.
  3. You might change the settings of this meditation in Control tab and/or Dynamic tab to adjust it for your taste and needs.
  4. Prepare a candle and make sure it is absolutely safe to light it up.
  • Instead of real wax candle, you can use any other small object for this meditation. It might be an image of a candle, a yantra, Om symbol, an image of deity or Guru, or simply a black marker dot on a sheet of paper. Any real object is more preferred than its image on the screen.

Training process

  1. Light up a candle and put it at your eye level 0.75-1 m (2.5 - 3 feet) away from you. Please make sure the place behind a candle does not produce any distracting movement (for example, falling leaves behind the window).
  2. Choose the comfortable position, sitting or standing. Make sure your spine is erect.
  3. Look at the flame of a candle and stabilize your gaze. Don't strain your eyes, yet don't let your sight wander.
  4. If any hustle thoughts or tensions come, imagine them burnt in a candle flame.
  5. Close your eyes, when they begin to water, or if you feel they are strained.
  6. Concentrate on the afterimage you see with your eyes closed.
  7. Once your eyes are rested, open them and continue gazing at the candle flame.
  8. Close and open your eyes a few times during this practice, focusing on the image or afterimage of the flame.
  9. After finishing the training session, close your eyes and wait until the afterimage is gone. Then you are ready to open your eyes and go back to the things you do.
  • NB! If you have a problem with constantly strained eyes or with dry eye syndrome, please consult your doctor regarding this practice.

Other questions

How long should I train? How can I combine this pattern with another? Should I always inhale through my nose?
